French grammar may seem rather daunting at first ... but try to learn a few rules and you are on your way ... Try not to worry about it ... the most important thing is to try and have a go at speaking the language and everything will fall into place |

THE GENDER OF NOUNS All nouns in French are either masculine or feminine. If they are masculine, use le for the, and un for a Example: le lapin (the rabbit) un lapin (a rabbit) If they are feminine, use la for the, and une for a Example: la souris (the mouse) une souris (a mouse) If the noun starts with a vowel, use l’ whether the noun is masculine or feminine. In this case, the word for a does not change. Example: l’arbre (the tree) l’orange (the orange) In the plural (more than one), use les for the, and des for some, whether the noun is masculine or feminine. Example: les chats (the cats) des chats (some cats)
